History

The building at Herengracht 247 dates back to 1648 and has a rich history. The Herengracht was constructed from 1612 onwards on the initiative of Mayor Frans Hendricksz Oetgens and takes its name from the regents of the city of Amsterdam. The characteristic bend in the canal is a reminder of the original city defences.

The plot was built on in 1648 by Anthonie Oetgens van Waveren (1585-1658), knight, lord of Waveren, Botsbol and Ruyge Wilnis, lieutenant of the militia and several times mayor of Amsterdam. He also held various important political and diplomatic positions and played a role in international peace negotiations in the 17th century. The building is therefore not only a special residential property, but also a tangible piece of Amsterdam’s history.
