Can I rent out my own home?

To rent out your own property, you may need permission from several parties:

  • any co-owners
  • your mortgage provider
  • your insurance company (a notification is usually sufficient)
  • the homeowners’ association (if applicable)
  • the municipality, but only if a local permit system applies

If your municipality requires a permit and you rent out the property without one, the fines can be significant. Your mortgage provider may demand immediate repayment, and your insurer might refuse to cover damages.

Plenty of reasons to carefully check whether you’re allowed to rent out your property – and who needs to approve it.
